It's a fun combination of Enter the Gungeon and Serious Sam.This isn't much of a first impressions review, as I've played quite a bit. I love this game. In this video I take a look at Serious Sam: Tormental a top down arcade style shooter.Finally some good old fashion explosive fun. This one is a bullet hell. It can get quite hard but it's great fun. There are loads of different monsters, weapons and explosives and you can earn gun upgrades as well for different effects. It's all tied together with a story that you progress through as you play. Weapons have impact.Good synergies. Good humor. Lot's of secrets.Hard as heck. The Serious Sam roguelike with gameplay inspired by that of popular roguelikes such as the Binding of Isaac and Nuclear throne. In terms of fun factor, Tormental is high on my list of favorite roguelikes despite the fact that I find the early game still way more punishing than it should be and constantly go between loving the game and hating it with a passion that burns harder than the hatred I feel when I die in Dark Souls. This little teeter-totter I'm on just makes me wish there were more permanent unlockables in this game that I could earn even if I end up dying a lot early on and then use as I please with some of them of course making the game harder, some making it easier, and maybe some simply being cosmetic if you could find a decent way to do that in a top-down shooter like this. Now I don't think we'd be seeing unlockables like that at least for a while because of a multitude of reasons. (I expect probably a lot of people would put these reasons in the comments followed by the phrase "Git gud, [WORD NOT SUITED FOR COMMUNITY]" if I enabled comments on this review.) What I usually like about roguelikes I've played so far is learning to make good builds from that random loot I'm given when I have the ability to choose 1 of X items/upgrades, but in Tormental all the builds seem to feel the same to me except for the ones that allow you do shoot yourself and take damage. Again despite my beefs with the game in its current state, it has all the other stuff that makes a good roguelike, I still find some enjoyment in it, it may be worth your time, and hopefully I'll have less to dislike about this game and I'll edit my review between now and the day after Tormental comes out of Early Access with or without some change or addition from the devs. I will be checking out each update to the game as they're released.. You get to run and gun in Mental's mind. 10/10. Changing the review to reflect information I obtained through the dev.as it is right now, this is a promising start for a dual stick roguelite.The visuals are well done, it's unique enough to not look liek anything else ont he market,m and it has the serious sam combat you probably expect - only it's delivered throutgh top-down aesthetics instead.You get a main wep - as of now, it has infinite ammoand a serious wep - these have limited ammo, and are generally better stronger weps.There's a bunch of secret stuff I noticed right off the bat, such as an area where an entity wants TONS OF KEYS for goodies.There's 3 chars, and they each have their own special attack sam does a jump, the er, robot girl has a black hole, and the other dude is a bomber. he probably bombs stuff x3there's a roll, but it is NOT A DODGE ROLL. there actually is no dodge roll in this game.might change, but as it is right now - none.Some mior performance issues, but that's top be expected when in early access.keep in mind any of this might change in updates ( the devs have done some drastic changes so far ). Man, screw this game. It's so fun and so addicting but so hard to win. I try to take a minute to ragequit but I keep coming back to this game. I love it. Devs, you did a hellava job.
